How Long Does It Take for Chicken Eggs to Hatch?

Chicken eggs typically take about 21 days to hatch, though this can range from 20 to 22 days depending on incubator temperature, humidity, and the breed of hen.

Incubation Tips

  • Turn the eggs 3-5 times a day, up until day 18.
  • Maintain a temperature of about 99.5°F and humidity of 50-55% for most of the incubation period.
  • From day 18 onward (“lockdown”), stop turning the eggs and raise humidity to 65-70% to help with hatching.
  • Avoid opening the incubator too often during lockdown, as this drops humidity and can affect hatch success.

FAQs

What percentage of eggs typically hatch? Under good incubation conditions, hatch rates of 75-90% are common, though this varies with egg fertility and handling. What if my eggs haven’t hatched by day 22? Some chicks hatch a day or two late. Give it until day 23 before assuming the eggs will not hatch, and avoid opening the incubator unnecessarily in the meantime.
