How To Manage Breeding, Start To Finish
A complete walkthrough of the Breeding module — from logging a new breeding record and letting expected dates calculate themselves, through confirming a pregnancy, updating outcomes, and seeing the full Family Map.
Log A Breeding In Seconds
Open Breeding — either for one animal from its Profile, or farm-wide from the main Breeding page — and click Add Breeding Record to open a focused popup. Pick the species first and the Dam and Sire dropdowns rebuild themselves live to only show animals of that species, with the Sire list further limited to males so an accidental mismatch simply isn't an option, on the form or when it's saved. Add the Breeding Date and Method, and you're done — the record is created and that animal's breeding history starts building from this first entry.
Expected Dates, Calculated For You
The moment a breeding record is saved, an Expected Date is worked out automatically from the Breeding Date plus that species' typical gestation period. The very first time you breed a given species, you'll be asked for its Gestation Period once — after that, it's remembered on the species itself, and every future breeding record for that species calculates its expected date instantly, with nothing to look up or re-enter.
Bred Isn't The Same As Confirmed Pregnant
A new breeding record starts out as Bred — Awaiting Confirmation. That's deliberate: an animal only shows as Pregnant elsewhere on the farm — its Profile badge, the Animals list Pregnant count, the Health dashboard — once you've explicitly updated that record's outcome to Confirmed. It keeps every pregnancy figure across the whole system trustworthy, instead of assuming every breeding attempt worked.
Update The Outcome As It Plays Out
Once you know how things went, update that same record's outcome to Confirmed, Born, Failed, or Lost right from its row — no need to recreate anything. A record you added by mistake can be removed with Delete just as easily. Every breeding record for an animal stays listed together, so its full breeding history — attempts, confirmations, and outcomes — is always one page away.
See The Whole Family Tree, Not Just One Record
Every confirmed breeding builds toward the Family Map — a clear Mother, Father, Siblings, and Children view for any animal, resolved automatically from parentage even when a parent or child started out as a promoted calf rather than a full animal record. It's the fastest way to check for accidental inbreeding, plan a next pairing, or simply see how one animal fits into the rest of the herd.
Breeding Connects Straight Back To The Animal
A confirmed pregnancy and a completed birth don't stay siloed on the Breeding page — they update that animal's Care Status badge and Profile automatically, and a birth outcome can create the new calf's record directly through Offspring, ready to grow into a full Livestock record of its own. Log it once on Breeding, and it's accurate everywhere else you look.
